A Whimsical Summer Wedding at Mount Tom House in Oregon

Some wedding venues give you one beautiful backdrop. Mount Tom House feels like it gives you an entire little world to explore.

J + A's June wedding began beneath cloudy Oregon skies, with a little rain moving through the property as everyone got ready. Then, almost perfectly timed, the clouds began to lift. The sun came out, the valley opened up below us, and the rest of the day unfolded between the forest, wildflowers, giant old trees, and the wonderfully strange and charming corners of the house itself.

It fit J + A so well.

Their wedding was whimsical and joyful without ever feeling overly styled. There were private vows on a tiny bridge beneath a giant willow tree, a ceremony tucked into the forest, portraits in a field of daisies, dinner outside overlooking the valley, and a dance floor that carried everyone into the summer night.

Mostly, though, there were two people who seemed incredibly happy to be marrying each other, surrounded by people who were equally happy to be there to witness it.

A Wedding Weekend at Mount Tom House

One of the things that makes Mount Tom House unusual is that it isn't really designed to be a place where you arrive for a few hours, have a wedding, and leave.

The property sits on 200 acres of forest in the Willamette Valley, just north of Eugene, and weddings include the house and property for the weekend. There are six guest rooms inside the house with lodging for up to 12 adults, with additional canvas tents available seasonally.

That changes the feeling of a wedding.

Instead of everyone converging on a venue shortly before the ceremony, some of your closest people can already be there. There is space for a Friday rehearsal dinner, breakfast together in the morning, the wedding itself, and then another slow morning together before everyone heads home. Mount Tom House actually structures its wedding weekends around that Friday-through-Sunday experience.

For couples who care as much about time with their people as they do about the wedding itself, I think that is one of the property's biggest strengths.

Getting Ready Inside Mount Tom House

The house itself might be one of my favorite parts of photographing a wedding here.

There are stained-glass windows, vintage furniture, unexpected colors, art, patterned details, and little pockets of interesting light everywhere. It almost feels like you're getting ready inside an art piece rather than a traditional wedding venue.

And as a photographer, that gives me so much to work with.

Instead of needing to manufacture variety, I can simply follow what is already happening and let the house become part of the photographs. A quiet moment near a stained-glass window feels completely different from someone laughing with their friends in one of the bedrooms or walking outside into the forest.

There is also an indoor pool, because somehow this wonderfully eclectic house has that too. The property includes the pool, a gym, expansive grounds and trails throughout the surrounding acreage.

It is charming, a little eccentric, and very Oregon.

Private Vows Beneath the Willow Tree

Before their ceremony, J + A found a quiet little pocket of the property for private vows.

There is a tiny bridge beneath this enormous willow tree, surrounded by green in every direction. It felt almost hidden away from everything else happening that day.

I love private vows for exactly this reason.

A wedding can hold so many people, conversations, traditions and moving pieces. Taking ten minutes to disappear together gives you a chance to actually hear one another before stepping back into all of it.

For J + A, it became one of those wonderfully quiet pieces of the day that existed alongside all of the bigger celebration to come.

A Forest Wedding Ceremony in the Willamette Valley

J + A held their ceremony tucked into the trees.

Mount Tom House is primarily an outdoor wedding venue, and the property gives couples flexibility to create different ceremony and reception layouts across the grounds. For larger celebrations, the venue currently says it comfortably hosts around 100 guests, with the option to discuss larger guest counts directly with their team.

What I loved about J + A's ceremony location was how enclosed it felt.

Even with a full group of people gathered around them, the trees created this little cove that made everything feel intimate. You could hear people laughing and crying and reacting as the ceremony unfolded without feeling like you were standing in the middle of a giant event space.

It was simply everyone they loved gathered beneath the trees.

And after the cloudy beginning to the day, the light slowly changing through the forest felt especially beautiful.

Daisy Fields, Forest Trails and Wedding Photos at Mount Tom House

This is where Mount Tom House becomes particularly fun from a photography perspective.

You have options.

There are the interiors of the house, the forest, huge old trees, open views, little bridges, trails, fields, and wide stretches of the property where the landscape completely changes depending on where you wander.

For J + A, one of those places was a field filled with tiny white daisies.

We didn't need to leave the property or turn portraits into a separate production. We wandered down into the flowers, let them have a little time together, and made some of my favorite photographs from the day.

That's one of my favorite ways to approach wedding portraits.

I don't want the photography to pull you out of your wedding for an hour while everyone you love is somewhere else having fun. Give me a beautiful pocket of light, an interesting landscape, and a little room for the two of you to breathe together, and we can make something beautiful without turning the day into a photoshoot.

An Outdoor Reception Overlooking the Valley

The reception took place on the large patio outside the house, with the landscape stretching out below everyone.

By then, the clouds from earlier in the day had cleared and the entire property felt different. What had started as a soft, rainy Oregon morning had opened into sunshine and huge views across the valley.

Dinner gave way to emotional toasts, conversations between tables, people wandering around the property, and eventually everyone making their way to the dance floor.

This is another reason the weekend format works so well here.

There isn't the same feeling of needing to rush everyone through a tightly contained venue experience. You're at a house in the forest. People can settle in, explore, spend time together and let the evening unfold.

Then the sun begins to disappear behind the hills and the whole patio changes again.

What It's Like to Photograph a Wedding at Mount Tom House

Having now photographed a full wedding here, the thing that stands out most to me is how much visual variety exists without leaving the property.

You can move from colorful, art-filled interiors to a forest ceremony, then photograph beneath a willow tree, wander through a field, catch the last light overlooking the valley, and finish the night on the patio without ever needing to get into a car.

That gives couples a lot of freedom.

And because the property is intended to be customized rather than forcing every couple through one predetermined layout, there is room to make the wedding feel like yours. The venue allows outside vendors and describes its grounds as a flexible outdoor canvas for events.

That flexibility was one of my favorite things about photographing here.

Planning a Mount Tom House Wedding

If you're considering Mount Tom House, the biggest thing to understand is that you're really choosing a wedding weekend, not simply renting a ceremony and reception venue.

The property is located in Harrisburg, Oregon, about 15 miles north of Eugene, with 200 acres of forest surrounding the house. Wedding weekends include two nights of lodging for up to 12 adults, breakfast for overnight guests, tables and chairs, and venue setup and cleanup. The venue currently lists summer wedding weekends for June through September and separate options for smaller weddings and elopements during other parts of the year.

A few practical things are worth knowing:

• Mount Tom House is primarily an outdoor venue, so larger weddings should have a rain plan. The venue recommends tent rentals when rain is expected.

• Micro weddings of 30 guests or fewer can have an indoor option when arranged in advance.

• Outside wedding vendors are allowed.

• The venue is pet-friendly.

• Wedding-day celebrations can currently continue until 11 p.m.

• The house itself sleeps up to 12 adults in six rooms, with seasonal canvas tents available for additional overnight guests.

Because venue offerings and pricing can change, I always recommend confirming current details directly with Mount Tom House while you're planning.

Presence Over Perfection

J + A's wedding began with rain.

Then the clouds moved.

The valley appeared.

People gathered beneath the trees, J + A promised themselves to each other twice in two completely different ways, once privately beneath a willow and once surrounded by everyone they loved. They wandered through daisies. Everyone ate dinner outside. The sun went down. People danced.

None of those things needed to be made perfect to be worth remembering.

That's ultimately what I want wedding photographs to hold onto.

Not simply what everything looked like, but what it felt like to actually be there while it was happening.

A Romantic Fall Wedding at Amaterra Winery in Portland, Oregon

There are weddings that are beautiful because of the details, and then there are weddings where the details somehow make the entire day feel even more alive.

S & M’s early October wedding was both.

It was one of those crisp Oregon fall days where summer hadn’t completely disappeared yet. The sun was out, the air had that unmistakable October coolness to it, and just a few hints of fall color were beginning to show across the hills.

They started the day getting ready at Amaterra Winery before heading into town for their ceremony at a local Catholic church. Afterward, everyone returned to Amaterra for cocktails on the terrace, golden-hour portraits, dinner, and a reception that felt equal parts elegant and incredibly warm.

A Portland Winery Wedding Overlooking the Willamette Valley

Amaterra is tucked into Portland’s West Hills, close enough to the city to feel accessible while still opening out toward the vineyards and wide views of the Willamette Valley. It’s a unique option for couples drawn to Oregon wine country, especially if you’re exploring some of the best winery wedding venues in the Willamette Valley.

Photographing here for the first time, one of the things I noticed immediately was how much the architecture works with the landscape rather than competing with it. There is so much natural light, clean modern architecture, huge windows, and easy movement between the indoor spaces and the terraces outside.

It feels polished without feeling sterile.

For S & M, that meant the winery could be home base for most of their day even though their ceremony took place off-site. They were able to get ready at Amaterra, leave for the church, and come back to a completely different atmosphere as their reception began.

Cocktail Hour on the Terrace

After the ceremony, guests gathered outside for cocktail hour while the late-afternoon light stretched across the valley.

This was one of my favorite parts of the day to photograph.

There was no need to manufacture much of anything. People were hugging, drinking wine, catching up, laughing in little groups, and wandering between the terrace and the reception space. Everywhere I looked there were layers of friendships and family relationships unfolding naturally.

That kind of space in a timeline matters.

It gave S & M time to actually be with the people who had come to celebrate them, and it gave me time to notice all the smaller interactions happening around them.

Golden Hour Wedding Photos at Amaterra

And then there was the light.

October gave us the kind of golden hour you hope for at a winery wedding. Warm light moved across the hills and vineyards as we stepped away for portraits, while their guests continued enjoying cocktail hour nearby.

Amaterra is especially beautiful for this because you don’t need to disappear for an hour or drive somewhere else to find a beautiful portrait location. The landscape, modern architecture, vineyard views, terraces, and open sky create plenty of variety right around the property.

We could make beautiful photographs without pulling S & M away from their celebration for long.

For me, that is always the goal.

The photos matter deeply. But so does getting to live the day the photos are meant to remember.

An Elevated, Romantic Amaterra Winery Reception

When everyone moved inside for dinner, the room had been completely transformed.

Tall draping softened the scale of the massive walls. Tables were layered with lush floral arrangements at different heights, greenery, candlelight, and thoughtful details everywhere you looked. The entire space felt romantic and full without losing the clean architecture that makes Amaterra so striking.

It was elaborate, but it didn’t feel elaborate simply for the sake of being impressive.

Every part of the design felt thoughtful.

I think that’s one of my favorite things about a beautifully designed wedding. The details can be incredible. The setting can be breathtaking. Everything can look like it belongs in a magazine.

But the real luxury is how all of that intention creates space for you to actually be there.

To sit down with the people you love. To hear the stories your friends tell about you during toasts. To laugh until your face hurts. To look around a room and realize how many people have shaped your life.

S & M’s reception held so much of that.

What It’s Like to Photograph a Wedding at Amaterra

From a photography perspective, Amaterra gives you an unusual amount of variety without asking you to sacrifice guest experience for photographs.

The winery sits high in Portland’s West Hills with views stretching toward the Willamette Valley, and its event spaces make use of large windows, terraces, fireplaces, modern architecture, and indoor-outdoor gathering areas.

The Skyline Ballroom in particular is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows and opens onto a large deck overlooking the valley, which makes it possible for a reception to feel connected to the landscape even after everyone moves inside.

For couples who care about both design and experience, that combination is really special.

You can create something visually incredible here, but your wedding can still feel like a gathering rather than a production.

And if golden-hour portraits are important to you, I would absolutely build a small pocket of time for them into your Amaterra wedding timeline. You don’t need long. Ten or fifteen minutes outside as the light changes can be enough before heading straight back to dinner, toasts, and everyone you love.

Planning an Amaterra Winery Wedding

Amaterra is located in Portland’s West Hills, overlooking the Willamette Valley, which makes it an interesting option for couples who love the feeling of Oregon wine country but want to stay close to Portland.

The property offers several event spaces, including the Skyline Ballroom and adjoining deck, along with outdoor areas overlooking the valley. For larger celebrations, the Skyline Ballroom can host a seated dinner reception while still maintaining access to the outdoor spaces and views.

One thing I especially appreciated after photographing here was how naturally the property supported the different rhythms of the day. Getting ready, portraits, cocktail hour, dinner, toasts, and dancing can all feel visually distinct without requiring guests to constantly move between completely separate locations.

S & M chose to hold their ceremony at a Catholic church and use Amaterra for the rest of the celebration, which is also a great example of how the venue can function as the main gathering place even when your ceremony happens somewhere meaningful to you elsewhere.

The laughter during cocktail hour. Friends leaning into one another during speeches. The way the room felt once everyone was seated together. S & M surrounded by people who so clearly knew them and loved them.

That’s ultimately what I want photographs to hold onto.

Not just what a wedding looked like, but what it felt like to be inside it.

And this one felt incredibly full.

Exposed brick, big windows, vintage character, moody corners, and a dance floor that stayed full all night. The Baker Building is one of those Portland venues that feels both industrial and intimate, and L & M leaned all the way into that energy for their artsy, city-meets-gallery wedding day.

Inside The Baker Building, L & M used their skills as designers to turn the simple space into an artful display for their smaller wedding day. The space doesn’t need much to feel special, the raw textures do a lot of the heavy lifting.

Their ceremony was full of personal vows, laughter, and that quiet moment right after the pronouncement where everyone collectively exhaled. As guests chatted over cocktail hour, we used the time to run down the street and catch golden hour at a local flower garden.

The rest of the evening was a mix of editorial-feeling portraits around the neighborhood, a delicious dinner, and a dance floor that never really slowed down. The Baker Building’s open layout made it easy for guests to drift between the bar, dessert table, and dancing without feeling separated.

L & M kept their details personal but unfussy, art-inspired signage, simple but intentional table decor, and a color palette that felt modern without being cold. Definitely design that can inspire your own wedding day!

Tips for Planning a Wedding at The Baker Building

Embrace the Industrial Mood

Leaning into the brick, beams, and warehouse windows will keep the space feeling cohesive. Think candlelight, sculptural florals, and design elements that complement rather than compete.

Build in Time for Neighborhood Portraits

The surrounding streets are amazing for portraits: textured walls, interesting lines, soft city light, and even a garden down the road. Plan at least 20–30 minutes to step outside.

Keep Your Timeline Flexible

One of the benefits of a venue like this is having everything in one place. You can transition from ceremony to cocktail hour to reception without moving guests, which gives you more flexibility for photos and moments together.

Mt. Hood Intimate Wedding at The Woodlands House | Twilight Inspired

Some wedding days feel like a festival. This one felt like a campfire story in the best possible way. B & B gathered ten of their favorite humans in the Mt. Hood forest at The Woodlands House for a Twilight inspired woodsy wedding filled with string lights, fog rolling through the trees, and the coziest cabin energy.

An Intimate Mt. Hood Wedding at The Woodlands House with Just Ten Guests

Instead of a big ballroom or crowded dance floor, these two chose a tucked-away cabin in the Mt. Hood in Oregon area as their “venue.” The ceremony took place under towering evergreens as the light started to fade, with their people surrounding them. Just vows, deep breaths, and the sound of the wind through the trees.

After the ceremony, I took B & B to the base of Mt. Hood for some incredible adventure photos in the empty riverbed. Then, we went and met everyone back at the Woodlands House property for an intimate candlelit dinner in the greenhouse followed by card games.

Choose a Location That Feels Like “Home Base”

Lean into the Twilight Timeline

For a similar look, plan your ceremony for the last hour of daylight and schedule portraits right after. Then design your dinner space around candlelight, string lights, and warm tones to keep the evening cozy.

A dreamy, modern ranch wedding in the Northern California hills — the magic of this day speaks for itself!

When I Krysta and Anthony told me that their wedding was going to be on family property, one where childhood memories were made and the land felt like home, I could feel the the love beaming from them! Truly though, there is something special about wedding days being in a meaningful place, one that holds so many stories already.

The most beautiful small wedding on the Oregon coast — it was a sweet, intimate day for these two, with friends and family gathered they said their vows along the waves, frolicked up and down the beach, and made a feast together before dancing the evening away!

TIP: If you want a dreamy, memorable wedding day that’s intimate, find an Airbnb on the coast (or wherever else makes you happy) and invite your closest people to come celebrate. Spend the weekend exploring, drinking wine with the views, and making meals together. There is something SO special about these kinds of days.

Ellie and Scotty created an experience for their small wedding day, full of precious moments — they walked down to the coastline for their vows, where there were both tears and laughter (from the sweet words AND the waves sweeping up around their feet). The celebration moved up to the wrap around deck where they all made a homemade feast together and mixed cocktails. After dinner, we sprinted (literally) beside the waves to catch the golden sunset!

Redwood Forest Intimate Wedding // Crescent City, CA

AN INTIMATE TINY WEDDING DAY AMONGST THE BEAUTIFUL CALIFORNIA REDWOOD FOREST.

Talk about the dreamiest backyard, intimate wedding — especially when the REDWOODS are your backyard! Alyssa and Santiago chose to have a sweet, meaningful wedding with their close friends and family. A while ago, Alyssa sent me an email describing what the evening would look like, and I just had to share her beautiful words —

“People will be munching on grilled cheese and tomato bisque in a mug. Dinner will be homemade quiche and a salad. There will be a couple of kegs and wine from local sources. A friend will be making a cider whiskey cocktail from the cider from the apple trees around the yard. There will be a cider press. Even the food ingredients will all be from the local dairy, herbs from the garden, things like that. Musical ambience will be sweet jazz and Motown during dinner. After first dances there will be more funky motown and salsa transitioning into Missy Elliot and Lizzo by the end of the night (the dances that Grandma will be long gone for haha). At the end of the night we will drive my mom's white mini cooper as our get away car and drive off to a airbnb tree house in the redwoods.”

Um, wow. I love that they made their day unique and fully structured to THEM and what they wanted. The true beauty of a tiny wedding. We explored the Redwood National Forest, ran across the empty fog-covered coastline, and danced the evening away surrounded by an apple orchard! My kind of night!

Mt. Rainier Micro Wedding | Woodsy A-Frame Cabin Wedding

An intimate wedding day at an A-frame cabin in the forest near Mt. Rainier National Park — a beautiful, tiny ceremony with close friends and family.

These two must have a thing for cabins (and I LOVE it) — we spent a morning at a cabin in the Oregon woods near Mt. Hood for their engagement photos, then they found this adorable a-frame cabin on a river near Mt. Rainier National Park. Dreams do come true!

Paige & Brenden chose to have an intimate day, a small micro wedding with their closest friends and family. With wild fires burning across the West Coast, there was a layer of smoke that hung in the sky, but it only added to the moody, soft vibe that these two had wanted!

They had the most beautiful ceremony on the deck of the cabin, ending with a collection group shot of champagne (my new favorite way to end a ceremony)! Then, they spent the evening laughing, sharing stories, snapping polaroids, and dancing under the trees. With a long table set for dinner along the river to share a meal together, it truly felt like “family” being a part of this day — every single detail was intentional.

Intimate Portland Wedding at Tendue // Mallory & Robbie

This intimate Portland city wedding chose to embrace joy and presence, even in the midst of COVID-19 chaos and the roller coaster of plan changes! It was a BEAUTIFUL day full of so much love and laughter!

I adore these two!! We’ve been chatting about their wedding since early 2019, and it’s been an honor to both watch and walk alongside them in this journey! They have been absolute CHAMPS as they’ve rolled with the punches of 2020 and plan changes! I’m so grateful to have couples who are so gracious and still choose to experience all the joy a day holds — no matter what it looks like!

This intimate wedding was a small gathering of their close friends and a few family members — joined by a zoom party of other guests (of course)! They truly chose presence, and the whole wedding day was so fun to be a part of! I loved everything about these sweet moments.

So so so thankful that I get to witness some pretty amazing stories!

This gorgeous city wedding at Castaway in downtown Portland, Oregon was the perfect way to wrap up 2019! A winter wedding in the urban scapes was all sorts of dreamy! And, a little extra snuggly! ;)

Cathedral Park Intimate Wedding // Amanda & Paul

AN INTIMATE FALL WEDDING ALONG THE PORTLAND SKYLINE UNDER ST. JOHN’S BRIDGE.

Amanda and Paul travelled across many states to come to Portland and have their intimate wedding under the St. Johns bridge in Cathedral Park. 

These two truly felt like friends from the very beginning. I loved getting to know them through the moments and details that were a part of their day — the game of thrones make up brushes, Frida Kahlo patterned robes, moody romantic fall colors, stories from their high school beginnings (including a prom pic, yep, pure GOLD), the vows they said to each other on this gorgeous autumn day, and the joy in the faces of their friends and family — all pieces to their story. It was nothing short of amazing to be a part of this day! 

Every moment felt effortless, they truly chose to be present in EVERY moment. Even when we arrived at the park to ANOTHER WEDDING PARTY USING THEIR CEREMONY SET UP!!! I mean, if that doesn’t trigger stress, not sure what would! But, Amanda and Paul had so much peace and grace, they chose joy over stress. And it was beautiful to watch them soak up and love every second of their beautiful wedding day! From their first look under the bridge, to an emotion-filled ceremony, to waterfront photos with the Portland skyline, to a meal celebrating their love, to getting DOWN on the dance floor — these two were so present with each part of the day.

Baker Building, Portland Wedding // Jay & Meagan

A lovely Fall wedding at the beautiful Baker Building in Portland, OR.

I met Jay & Meagan for tea over a year before their wedding day — and I knew right from the start I wanted to capture their wedding day! The joy the carried was undeniable! I was immediately drawn to their vision of an intimate, October, city wedding in Portland — surrounded by a small group of their closest friends and family.

Fast forward to a year + a couple months later, their day was just as dreamy as I imaged it when they described their vision the summer before. Fall colors, moody Oregon skies, a minimalistic industrial space, earthy tones, decor that was unique and special to them and who they are, and an intimate setting to make their promises to one another. It was beautiful.

The Portland Baker Building is STUNNING. The space is full of warm woods and white walls, with soft window light — it’s a creatives’ dream for urban, minimalism!

I was blown away by the love these two share! Every piece of the day was meaningful, everything had a purpose or was special to them. The gifts — their wedding song lyrics, an “inside joke” shirt, and a pair of dream shoes. The decor — old, collected books, intricate beer steins, and posters with poems. Dinner — the BEST pizza (that’s their thing — see engagement photos hehe).

And, the most emotional moment, the last few pictures of this day…

Jay had written Meagan a song, a secret song. As the night drew to an end, he pulled her into a side room and sat her down. When he started singing, I think we all had goosebumps and tears. These two truly cherish one another, deeply. Those last photos remind me why I do what I do… it’s not about the perfect room, or the most aesthetic space… it’s about those moments. The ones that wreck you and remind you that you’re capturing a small piece of a much bigger story. And that, is an incredible honor.

TIPS FROM THIS DAY…

I. MAKE IT YOU. Like Meagan and Jay did, bring in little details that speak to you and your relationship — wear sneakers, bring old books, eat some pizza — you do you.

II. LOOK AT EACH OTHER A LOT. These two had the most in love looks, even across the room. Remember to take time to soak it up, stare into each others eyes, get all mushy gushy, this is your day!

III. GO SOMEWHERE SPECIAL. They really wanted to walk across the street and do photos in a coffee shop they loved! That’s awesome! Somewhere you really want to do photos?! Let’s do it! There is no “normal.”

Vintage Meets Modern City Wedding // Portland, OR // Emily & Johnny

THE TIMELESS VINTAGE DECOR MIXED WITH A MODERN SETTING IN DOWNTOWN PORTLAND — IT WAS A DREAMY DAY!

This urban wedding at the Castaway in downtown Portland was the perfect blend of vintage meets modern. Every aspect was timeless and each detail was creatively and beautifully thought through! I mean, just scroll down and check out the GORGEOUS whimsical arch that they built themselves for the ceremony! I want it in my house! 

Castaway is a rad urban venue with a clean slate for all your creative ideas! Every time I shoot there, I find new spaces to photograph and explore. This time, it was a modern white brick building on the corner — a stunning, minimalistic backdrop for their first look and other wedding party photos! There’s something that seems to fit every couple there! 

All the tables were set with books, handmade bowls (that Johnny created himself, AMAZING), and vintage Portland postcards with table letters for seating. For the Love of Floral also created STUNNING florals for the entire space, with colors that made everything come to life and glow in the late afternoon sun.

Emily & Johnny’s day was incredible, full of so much love and life — not to mention vows that made me sob behind the camera! It’s an honor to capture a love story that is so so so drenched in pure love and commitment to the journey together. Emily and Johnny have such sweet and gentle spirits, yet their love is fierce for one another. 

I’m so excited to share these few highlighted moments throughout their day!
